REFLECTION | 01 Communication

To be sure that our students are learning the language the best as possible, we have to do the classes taking into account that the communication is the most important skill we have to work on.

What does a communicative class involve?

  • Active students and, of course, an active teacher!

  • Group or pair work, so that the speaking plays a leading role.

  • A communicative environment (the distribution of the class has a lot to do with the student’s predisposition to speak).

Once we know what methodology we have to use and how to prepare the classroom, we can go further and think about the activities we can use. These activities have to be prepare in order to make the students speak and listen English all the time, so it is very important to think about those that are very dynamic and motivating.

In class, the teacher showed us an activity based on thinking about phrases in which its words starts with the letters the teacher gives. For example, with C-B-L-W, we can make the sentence Laura wanted blue chairs.

We also have to make sure that all the activities are meaningful for the students, so that they get very involved and motivated. In other words, as my teacher says, the main objective is to create opportunities for the children to speak in realistic situations.

During all the class we have to promote the authentic communication. This authentic communication happens when children have to talk about their personal life or personal experience, instead of speaking about an object or an imaginary situation.

Here you can see a little mind map about the curcial facotrs for having an authentic communication
