REFLECTION | 05 Ways to present language
First, I would like to comment some little tips that we have seen at class about making the students get engaged with the language:
- Invite guest speakers: invite other pepople to comd to the class (obviously, English speakers)
- Silent speech: use gestures, writting on the board... but without speaking.
- Give brief response: not just only listen what you say, but do what you say.
- Move around the class: help all the groups when they are doing corners or pair/group work.
- Use L1 ocassionaly: translate words or phrases if necessary (for example new words or grammar)
The language chunks are useful to crate a productive and rich learning enviorment becayse they are a natural way of integrating language in class.
When presenting language to the students, we must take into account:
RELEVANCE. The context related to the learner's world (meaningful activities).
INVOLVEMENT. The learners are active during the presentation.
CHALLENGING ACTIVITIES. The way you integrate the language makes learners think.
VARIATION AND SPEECH OF DELIVERY. Pace not to slow and the activities are varied.
A GENERATIVE CONTEXT. The context provides plenty of examples of the focused structure.
